HOWO vs SHACMAN: Which Chinese Heavy Truck Fits Your Fleet?
HOWO and SHACMAN are the two names most buyers compare first, and the comparison is often framed as a brand question. It is really a question about which platform is easier to keep running in your market.
Shared DNA
Both are MAN-derived platforms. SINOTRUK licensed the MAN TGA/TGX technology in 2009, and SHACMAN (Shaanxi) built its X3000 and X5000 on the same licensed cab and chassis architecture. In practice this means similar cab dimensions, similar axle ratings and comparable fuel consumption for the same duty cycle.
Engines and drivelines
| HOWO | SHACMAN | |
|---|---|---|
| Common engine families | WD615, MC07, MC11, MC13 | WD615, WP10, WP12, WP13 (Weichai) |
| Gearboxes | FAST 10/12-speed, S-AMT16 | FAST 10/12-speed, AMT options |
| Typical strengths | Simplest to repair, huge parts network | Stronger chassis reputation in mining and heavy haul |
| Cab | HW76 / HW70, well-known layout | Delong cab, slightly better insulation on newer series |
Parts availability — the deciding factor
If your operation is within reach of a major port, HOWO usually wins on parts. WD615 consumables (filters, liners, injectors, clutch kits) are the most widely counterfeited and the most widely stocked parts in the Chinese truck world, which keeps prices low and downtime short. SHACMAN parts are equally available in markets with a strong Shaanxi dealer base — West Africa, Central Asia and parts of Latin America — but thin elsewhere.
Price and resale
For an equivalent specification, HOWO tends to price slightly lower on FOB, and it holds resale value better in markets where it is already common. SHACMAN's premium is easier to justify on heavy haul and mining duty cycles, where chassis and cooling capacity matter more than purchase price.
A simple decision rule
- Long-haul tractor, mixed fleet, first import: HOWO.
- Mining, quarry or 60 t+ gross combination: SHACMAN X3000 / X5000.
- Fleet that already runs one brand: stay with it — tooling, training and parts stock are worth more than a marginal spec advantage.
- Buying used: condition history beats brand every time.
What we recommend in practice
Send us the duty cycle — payload, road gradient, daily distance, fuel quality and driver experience — and we will tell you which of the two is the lower-cost choice over five years. That answer is sometimes the opposite of what the buyer expected.
